No one took notice of the book when it was first published in my home country of Brazil 25 years ago. One bookseller in the northeastern region of the nation informed me that during the first week of the book’s release, exactly one copy was bought. The bookseller had to wait an additional six months to sell a second copy, even to the original buyer! Who knows how long the third took to sell?

About Book: The Alchemist PDF Read Now Book In English By Paulo Coelho

Everyone could see by the end of the year that The Alchemist was failing. My first publisher chose to sever ties with me and end our agreement. They gave up on the project and allowed me to take the book. I was desperate and forty-one. However, I never wavered in my vision or lost trust in the book. Why? Because that was me—my entire being, heart, and soul—in there.

I was being a metaphor for myself. Dreaming of a beautiful or magical place, a man sets out on a journey to find an unidentified treasure. The man discovers at the end of his journey that the treasure was always with him. I was living out my personal legend, and my writing ability was my treasure. And I wanted the entire world to know about this treasure.

The universe works together to support you when you want something, as I stated in The Alchemist. I began pounding on other publishers’ doors. One opened, and the publisher on the other side decided to give The Alchemist another shot because she thought I was serious about my book. Word of mouth eventually caused it to start selling, three thousand, six thousand, and ten thousand books, book by book, over the course of the year.

A copy of The Alchemist was discovered in a neighborhood bookshop by an American who was visiting Brazil eight months later. He was interested in translating the book and assisting me in locating an American publisher. HarperCollins consented to release it for the American market, and they did so with considerable fanfare, including radio and television interviews, ads in the New York Times and other prestigious news magazines.

However, it still took some time to sell; much like in Brazil, word-of-mouth spread slowly to the United States audience. Bill Clinton was then seen holding a copy as he was pictured leaving the White House one day. Then Madonna gushed about the book to Vanity Fair, and suddenly everyone was talking about it, from college students to soccer moms to Rush Limbaugh and Will Smith.

The Alchemist developed into an organic and unplanned phenomenon. An essential accomplishment for any writer, the book made it onto the New York Times bestseller list and remained there for more than three hundred weeks. It is regarded as one of the top ten books of the twentieth century and has been translated into over eighty languages, making it the most translated work by a living author.

I’m still asked by people if I could have predicted The Alchemist’s success. No, is the response. I was completely ignorant. How was I able to? All I knew when I started writing The Alchemist was that I wanted to write about my soul. I had a desire to write about my search for my treasure. Knowing then that the omens are the language of God, I wanted to follow them. Even though The Alchemist is currently commemorating its 25th anniversary, it is not a throwback.

The book is still going strong. It lives on every day because it contains both my heart and soul, just like my heart and soul do. And your heart and soul are also mine. Just as you are Santiago the shepherd boy searching for your own treasure, so too am I, the shepherd boy, in search of mine. One man’s quest is the quest of all of humanity, and the story of one person is the story of everyone, which is the reason I think The Alchemist still has an impact on people today, decades later, regardless of their cultural background, touching them on an equal and spiritual level.

I frequently reread The Alchemist, and each time I do, I feel the same emotions that I did when I first wrote it. And this is how I’m feeling. I am happy because it is both who I am and who you are all at once. I am happy because I am aware that I will never be by myself. People are understanding of me everywhere I go. They are aware of my soul. This gives me hope even now.

Upon reading about conflicts worldwide, be they political, economic, or cultural, I am reminded that we have the ability to construct a bridge that can be crossed. My neighbor can relate to my story, even if he doesn’t share my political or religious views. I’m always here for him if he can relate to my story. Building a bridge is always within my power. There’s always a chance for forgiveness, a chance that one day we’ll sit down at a table and put an end to our long history of disagreements. And I’ll tell him my story, and he’ll tell me mine on this day.
